Chapter 16

A Track to Run On (Jackson)

Conceptually, the transition to a teaching career would be a simple step. In practice, I needed to ride my figurative train.

The photo reminds me of an early encounter on a steam train. My Mum had warned me about putting my head out of the window when inside a tunnel. She said, "Soot could get in your eye". I put my head out, and soot caused my eyes to water. Reason was trumped by my fascination with trains!

As a young child, I was an obsessive-compulsive train spotter. I would find vantage points from which to view train engines, and use Ian Allan publications to record the engine numbers I had spotted. Sometimes these engines sped right past me on the platform where I was standing.
