Chapter 5

Medicating Pain (Jackson)

"We found out soon enough that whatever we were drinking, snorting, smoking, buying, debting, eating, loving or having sex with was our medication to hide pain." (Wholey).

When I ponder the impact of war on my parents, I have come to believe that for most of their lives, they suffered post-traumatic stress. Their feelings of alienation from the British society my Dad had helped to protect engendered deep emotional pain. For most of their lives, smoking and drinking provided a modicum of relief. Although I was an adult child of functioning alcoholic parents, their drinking never resulted in physical abuse or lack of financial provision within their sometimes limited means.
