Chapter 4

Family Identity (Jackson)

The image of the Internment Camp is a stark reminder of how the United States reacted in time of war to a perceived threat. Sadly, this impacted Japanese Americans who had emigrated from Japan, to escape from the rising reach of the Japanese military. This triggered in them the release of exceptionally intense feelings of betrayal and isolation.

Although those who were interned might not have been privy to the inspiring words of Winston Churchill, they never gave up! They tirelessly worked to maintain their family identity in the midst of the heartache, which has only recently been voiced publicly. A visit to the Japanese National Museum in Los Angeles gave me a profound understanding of the intensity of my parent’s unspoken feelings.
