Chapter 9

Steal my Purse (Jackson)

"Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
 Is the immediate jewel of their souls;
 Who steals my purse steals trash;
 ’tis something, nothing;
 ’twas mine, ’tis his,
 and has been slave to thousands;"

Shakespeare’s quote provides a healthy perspective. Some things can’t be stolen, such as the priceless joy associated with teaching my daughters how to swim. However, on four occasions I recovered from the temporary disquiet precipitated by theft. The first incident involved witnessing a crime, which unfolded in front of the building shown in the print above.
